Diabetes Management in Older Adults
Module Description
This module is designed to equip health care professionals with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively manage diabetes in older adults. With a focus on understanding the unique challenges faced by elderly patients with diabetes, participants will explore various aspects of care, including financial constraints, cognitive impairments, and the impact of Medicare on diabetes management. 
Learning Objectives

At the end of this module, participants will be able to: 

  1. Recall the unique challenges faced by older patients with diabetes, including financial constraints, cognitive impairments, and the impact of Medicare on diabetes management. 
  2. Evaluate and recommend appropriate diabetes medications for older patients living with diabetes, considering factors such as polypharmacy, cognitive issues, and medication interactions. 
  3. Make informed decisions regarding glycemic goals and medication adjustments for older patients. 
Module Faculty




 

Scott Pilla, MD, MHS 

Dr. Scott Pilla is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins. He completed internal medicine residency at Johns Hopkins Bayview and subsequently the Clinical Investigation Fellowship in General Internal Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Pilla is a researcher and practicing general internist. His research focuses on the management of type 2 diabetes with aging, especially individualizing diabetes treatment to account for the preferences and needs of older adults. He is currently funded by a K23 Career Development Award from the NIDDK to study hypoglycemia prevention strategies in primary care. He is also an investigator on the DASH 4 Diabetes clinical trial, an ongoing randomized feeding study investigating the effects of a DASH-style diet on blood pressure control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
