The ADA and the Nutritional Sciences and Metabolism Interest Group (NSMIG) host a one-hour panel discussion and question-and-answer session related to the ‘hot topic’ of effects of the ketogenic (keto) diet in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Joining the panel discussion are experts in the area: Andrew Koutnik, PhD, research scientist at the Sansum Diabetes Research Institute, shares the evidence and his own experience and research related to the impacts of the keto diet for type 1 diabetes. Nia S. Mitchell, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Medicine and Medical Weight Management Specialist at Duke University, shares the evidence and her clinical experience related to the effects of the keto diet for type 2 diabetes. Elisabetta Politi, CDCES, MPH, RD is a Certified Diabetes Educator and Dietitian who sees patients at the Duke Lifestyle and Weight Management Center and shares her experiences with and tips for counseling patients on the keto diet.

  2. Understand the evidence for the effects of the ketogenic diet in type 2 diabetes

Nia S. Mitchell, MD, MPH obtained her medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis, and she completed her internal medicine residency and primary care research fellowship at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. As part of her fellowship, she obtained a master of public health degree. Dr. Mitchell’s initial faculty appointment was at the University of Colorado, and she is currently an associate professor of General Internal Medicine at Duke University. Dr. Mitchell’s research involves weight loss interventions for underserved populations, and she has been funded by through a Diversity Supplement through National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, a K01 through the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute; and an R01 through the National Institute on Aging. Her recent research involves: 1) Changes in weight and physical function for older African American women; and 2) Feasibility and acceptability of a nonprofit weight loss program among African American breast cancer survivors. She has Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in chemical engineering. Prior to attending medical school, she worked as an engineer for M&M/Mars (the candy company!) and DuPont.

Andrew Koutnik, PhD is a research Scientist at Sansum Diabetes Research Institute in Santa Barbara, CA and Visting Scientist at Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition. Dr. Koutnik is currently investigating the therapeutic role of culturally tailored lifestyle interventions and carbohydrate restriction in both diabetes management and prevention, as well as exploring therapeutic options that regulate the multisystem impacts of glycemia and hyperinsulinemia. Andrew is also a patient with Type- 1 Diabetes for over 16 years.

Elisabetta Politi, RD, MPH, LDN, CDCES is a clinical dietitian at the Duke Lifestyle & Weight Management Center with over 30 years of experience. In 2020 she became certified as a Health and Wellness Coach.


Elisabetta’s professional career has been dedicated to the prevention of chronic diseases through diet and weight management. She enjoys teaching nutrition classes and cooking demonstrations. She is passionate about food, its culture and the food habits worth preserving and reviving.

Elisabetta Politi holds a B. S. in Food Science and Technology from the University of Milan, and a Master in Public Health Nutrition from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Elisabetta gives several invited lectures and presentations. She has been interviewed and/or quoted by the “Wall Street Journal,” “Today Show,” “The NBC Night News,” “The Discovery Health Channel” and several local television stations.
