Key Messages

Diabetes/hyperglycemia and insulin resistance with hyperinsulinemia increase sodium transport and Angiotensin 2 production in the kidney, resulting in increased intravascular volume leading to increased preload and afterload in the heart, cardiac remodeling, and heart failure.
Inhibition of SGLT reduces Na/Glucose uptake and RMS activity by multiple mechanisms.
This improvement in Na and glucose homeostasis reduces cardiovascular and kidney dysfunction.

Dr. Lance Sloan is triple board certified in Endocrinology, Nephrology, and Internal Medicine; and a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology, the American Society of Nephrology, the Endocrine Alliance Academy, the American Society of Preventive Cardiology, and the American College of Physicians. Currently he is President of the Texas Institute for Kidney and Endocrine Disorders and Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX, and Sam Houston State University in Conroe, TX.
