Learning Objective

Module 1:

  • DEFINE diabetes and the criteria for its diagnosis.
  • UNDERSTAND the prevalence of diabetes and its related societal costs.
  • DISCUSS the complications and health consequences of uncontrolled diabetes.
  • RECOGNIZE the risk factors for diabetes and the potential role of optometrists in encouraging screening for appropriate patients.  

 

Module 2:

  • DEFINE prediabetes and explain its relationship to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
  • APPRECIATE the scope of prediabetes and the importance of preventing diabetes.
  • UNDERSTAND the three pathways to prevention: lifestyle modification, pharmacological treatment, and bariatric surgery.
  • EXPLAIN the potential role of optometrists in encouraging their patients to adopt lifestyle changes aimed at preventing diabetes.  

 

Module 3:

  • IDENTIFY recommended glycemic target ranges for people with diabetes.
  • UNDERSTAND the challenges of controlling blood glucose for people with type 1, type 2, or gestational diabetes.
  • DESCRIBE the causes and symptoms of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia and the appropriate treatment of hypoglycemia.
  • UNDERSTAND how to identify and treat possible hypoglycemia in the optometry clinic.  

 

Module 4:

  • APPRECIATE the team approach to diabetes care and the patient’s central role on the team.
  • DISCUSS the importance of healthy eating, physical activity, and routine health care in the management of diabetes.
  • DESCRIBE the pharmacological therapy options for people with diabetes.
  • UNDERSTAND the multiplicity of barriers faced by people with diabetes in their daily lives.
