Target Audience
This activity is intended for optometrists and other eye care professionals.

 

Learning Objectives
Module 1:

  • UNDERSTAND the ocular manifestations associated with diabetes.
  • RECOGNIZE and appropriately refer patients with signs that could indicate undiagnosed diabetes.
  • APPRECIATE the person-centered considerations involved in the treatment of diabetic eye disease and the fact that ocular complications may manifest differently with differing patient characteristics. 
  • DISCUSS some of the key messages people with diabetes should be hearing consistently from all of their health care providers including eye care professionals. 

 

Module 2:

  • DISCUSS some of the recent advancements in the treatment of diabetic eye disease.
  • APPRECIATE the value of early diagnosis and treatment of diabetic eye disease.
  • UNDERSTAND the latest recommendations for person-centered, outcomes-driven pharmacologic management of type 2 diabetes and how newer treatments affect diabetic eye disease specifically.
  • GAIN a basic understanding of continuous glucose monitoring and related new metrics (e.g., time in range) for assessing diabetes management.

 

Modules 3:

  • UNDERSTAND the complementary roles of diabetes health care
    and eye care providers within the larger interdisciplinary diabetes
    care team.
  • EXPLAIN the decision cycle for person-centered management
    of type 2 diabetes and how it may be adapted for person-centered management of diabetic eye disease.
  • LEARN several approaches to effectively communicating with
    patients with diabetes and eye complications.
  • APPRECIATE the need for holistic care that addresses not only patients’ eye health concerns, but also their psychosocial needs and potential barriers to optimized diabetes management and eye health.
