Diabetes is Primary Module 2 - 2021
Module 2: Intensifying Pharmacologic Therapies; How and When

Understanding how and when to intensify treatment is critical in care of patients with type 2 diabetes. During this module we will discuss how the patient-centered approach can be used when intensifying antihyperglycemic medication. We will learn how to weigh patient preference, comorbidities, and side effects when considering treatment intensification.  We will also discuss the importance of not delaying intensification and how to do so safely and effectively.

Learning objectives:

  • Discuss individualizing glycemic targets and antihyperglycemic medication based on patient’s characteristics and preferences in a shared decision-making approach.
  • Demonstrate how to intensify antihyperglycemic therapy.
  • Discuss how to initiate and intensify insulin therapy.
