Module 3: Effectively Manage Cardiovascular Disease and Risk

Prevention and management of cardiovascular disease is critical for people with diabetes.  In this module, we will discuss how to systematically assess your patients for cardiovascular disease and risk factors to monitor on a regular basis.  We will review what new research has told us with regard to treatment approaches and how you can incorporate this research into your practice. 

  

Learning objectives: 

  • Summarize the cardiovascular risk reduction noted in clinical trials of certain antihyperglycemic agents ​
  • Identify antihypertensive treatment approaches for adults with diabetes and hypertension ​
  • Identify appropriate statin therapy for patient with diabetes and dyslipidemia ​
  • Indicate appropriate use of antiplatelet agents in patients with diabetes​

Dr. Wright holds appointments as Consulting Associate in the Department of Community and Family Medicine and the Department of Medicine of Duke University Medical Center and as Clinical Associate Professor at the Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine. He has over 39 years of clinical experience as a private practitioner, academic clinician and educator, medical administrator, a rural physician in southeastern NC and a volunteer physician. He currently works with the Charlotte AHEC in Performance Improvement.
