Module 6: Practical Tips for Addressing Mental Health Challenges in People with Diabetes

Mental health issues, including diabetes distress and depression, are common in people with diabetes and emotional well-being is an essential part of diabetes care and self-management.  During this module, you will learn how to recognize the wide range of psychosocial issues associated with diabetes and the impact these issues have on your patients.  We will review screening tools you can use to assess symptoms in your patients.  We will also discuss appropriate referral and treatment options, including how to implement a team-based approach to better address mental health challenges.

 

Learning objectives:

  • Describe the most common psychosocial issues associated with diabetes, including diabetes distress and depression​
  • List screening tools for assessing symptoms of diabetes distress and depression​
  • Indicate appropriate referral and treatment options for people impacted by diabetes distress and depression​
  • Identify paradigms for implementing psychosocial services into team-based care

Dr. Heyman is a diabetes psychologist, Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist and the CEO of the Center for Diabetes & Mental Health. Mark received his PhD in Clinical Psychology from The George Washington University and completed his psychology internship at the UCSD School of Medicine. Mark is the host of The Diabetes Psychologist podcast and has been living with Type 1 diabetes since 1999.
