Women's Health: Gestational Diabetes

OVERVIEW

This is a four module CE program to deliver education on the health of women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) to midwives, doulas, community health workers (CHW) and other diabetes care professionals.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Describe the purpose of screening for GDM at 24-28 weeks of pregnancy. 
  • Identify the elements of the treatment plan for women with GDM.
  • Determine the role of blood glucose monitoring in women with GDM.
  • Understand the implications of stigma, racism, disparity, and social determinants of health in women with GDM.

MODULES

MODULE 1

GDM Basics

In the module, you will learn about gestational diabetes (GDM), including screening best practices, risk factors associated with GDM, and the risk of maternal and fetal complications.

MODULE 2

GDM and Treatments

This module will explain the benefits of treating GDM and the main treatment options. Learn the key items to discuss with women regarding the postpartum period.

MODULE 3

 Technology and GDM Management

Learn how to identify blood glucose goals in pregnancy, the recommended frequency of blood glucose monitoring, and the features of continuous glucose monitors (CGM) for a person with GDM.

MODULE 4

GDM and Health Equity

During this module, explore social determinants of health and diabetes outcomes and the roles of doulas, midwives, and community health workers in the outcomes of patients with diabetes.
