PROGRAM

Current & Evolving Issues in Obesity Care at Scientific Sessions and Beyond

OVERVIEW

Explore 11 recorded sessions focused on obesity from the American Diabetes Association’s Scientific Sessions. This on-demand collection highlights emerging research, evolving clinical guidance, therapeutic advances, and new perspectives on the physiology, assessment, and management of obesity.

Learners may explore individual sessions based on their interests, practice needs, and areas of specialization.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Examine recent advances in obesity science, assessment, and clinical care.

  • Evaluate current and emerging approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of obesity, including novel pharmacologic therapies.

  • Apply current evidence and clinical guidance to support individualized, person-centered obesity care across diverse populations and practice settings.

VIDEOS

Video 1: ADA Diabetes, Obesity, and Cardiometabolic CARE (DOCM CARE) Journal Symposium: The Cost of Obesity and its Treatment

Examine the health, economic, and social value of obesity treatment through microsimulation modeling. Consider how coverage requirements and access barriers influence treatment availability and the clinical and economic consequences of treating versus not treating obesity.

Video 2: ADA DSMES/Nutrition Symposium: Disordered Eating in Diabetes and Obesity

Explore clinical features and screening approaches for disordered eating and eating disorders in people with diabetes and/or obesity. Consider interdisciplinary management, appropriate responses to risks associated with obesity medications, and the physiologic connections among psychological stress, hunger, and eating behavior.

Video 3: Amylin as a Novel Diabetes and Obesity Therapy

Explore the physiology of amylin and its emerging role as a therapeutic target in diabetes and obesity. Consider how amylin-based therapies may contribute to the evolving treatment landscape.

Video 4: BMI on Trial: Should It Still Define Obesity

Examine evidence supporting and challenging the use of body mass index (BMI) in the diagnosis of obesity. Consider the limitations of BMI and the implications of different approaches to obesity assessment.

Video 5: Discussion on Obesity: Reclaiming the Full Spectrum of Obesity Care

Explore the full spectrum of obesity care and the importance of comprehensive, individualized approaches to treatment. Consider how multiple strategies can be integrated to address the complex needs of people living with obesity.

Video 6: Discussion on Pregnancy and Reproductive Health: Adverse Outcomes in GDM-Hyperglycemia or Obesity?

Examine the relative contributions of maternal hyperglycemia and obesity to adverse pregnancy and neonatal outcomes, including fetal growth and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Consider strategies to optimize maternal and neonatal outcomes before and during pregnancy.

Video 7: Global Perspectives on Obesity Care

Explore obesity care from a global perspective, including differences in clinical approaches, population needs, health care environments, and challenges affecting the delivery of obesity care.

Video 8: Hope or Hype? Microbiome as New Frontier for Type 2 Diabetes and Obesity

Evaluate evidence linking the gut microbiome to type 2 diabetes and obesity, distinguishing biological activity and causality from associative findings. Consider current limitations in microbiome measurement, diagnostics, and intervention research that affect clinical implementation.

Video 9: How Do We Close Gaps in Access to Obesity Care?

Explore evidence-based, complication-centered, and person-centered approaches to obesity care, including individualized treatment and monitoring based on clinical needs, preferences, and response. Consider gaps between current standards and quality measures, as well as team-based, community, and health-system strategies to improve equitable access to comprehensive obesity care.

Video 10: Perspectives from ADA Banting Medalists on Obesity Pathogenesis: Current State and Future Directions

Hear expert perspectives on the mechanisms underlying obesity pathogenesis and how advances in basic and translational science are shaping the understanding of obesity.

Video 11: Pregnancy Pregame: Hot Topics in Preconception Management of Diabetes and Obesity

Explore preconception strategies to reduce pregnancy-related risks among people with obesity and diabetes, including individualized contraceptive selection based on effectiveness, cardiometabolic risk, diabetes-related complications, and U.S. Medical Eligibility Criteria. Consider evidence and individualized approaches for discontinuing GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy before pregnancy while supporting contraception, glycemic management, gestational weight goals, and long-term obesity care.
