Obesity 101 for Behavioral Health Professionals

OVERVIEW

This module lays the foundation for behavioral health professionals to deliver effective, empathetic care to individuals living with obesity.  

 

By exploring obesity pathophysiology, weight stigma, and evidence-based treatments for obesity, this module equips behavioral health professionals to provide non-judgmental care while addressing psychological and behavioral aspects of obesity within multidisciplinary treatment teams. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Define obesity as a chronic disease with multifactorial causes. 

  • Identify evidence-based communication strategies that reduce weight-based stigma. 

  • Compare the efficacy of obesity treatments including lifestyle modification, pharmacotherapy, and metabolic surgery. 

  • Recognize the role of behavioral health care professionals in multidisciplinary obesity care.
