Managing Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease 

     

OVERVIEW

The Managing Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease CE program from the American Diabetes Association® is designed to equip healthcare professionals with evidence-based clinical strategies for the prevention, early detection, screening, diagnosis, and long-term management of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in individuals living with diabetes. This program ensures that learners receive the most current, evidence-based education to support timely intervention, optimize health outcomes, and improve the delivery of comprehensive diabetes and kidney care. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of this activity, participants will be able to: 

  • Screen and diagnose CKD using evidence-based recommendations  

  • Identify timely and appropriate behavioral, lifestyle, and medication therapies for people living with diabetes and CKD  

  • Treat CKD and cardiovascular disease as a part of a holistic approach to diabetes care 

  • Address disparities in healthcare to improve screening and treatment of CKD in people living with diabetes

MODULES

Module 1 

Advanced Course 1: Achieving Goals with Cardiac and Renal Protection in Mind 

This module is designed to strengthen knowledge of evidence-based strategies for managing blood glucose, blood pressure, and lipids in people living with type 2 diabetes, while recognizing the impact of diabetes on chronic kidney disease, end-stage kidney disease, and cardiovascular risk. Participants will evaluate lifestyle and pharmacologic approaches, including GLP-1 receptor agonists and other antihyperglycemic therapies, to reduce cardiorenal and metabolic risk and improve overall patient outcomes. 

Module 2 

Diabetes for Patient Care Tech Staff: Diabetes 101 

This module is designed specifically for patient care technicians to build foundational knowledge of the major types of diabetes, associated risk factors and comorbidities, and the unique considerations of caring for individuals with diabetes receiving hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Participants will examine how dialysis affects glycemic management, blood glucose monitoring, and nutrition management, while applying individual-first, non-stigmatizing language to support respectful, person-centered care. 

Module 3

Diabetes for Patient Care Tech Staff: Healthy Eating with Diabetes

This module is designed specifically for patient care technicians to strengthen their understanding of how dialysis treatment, fluid management, nutrition, physical activity, and medications interact to influence diabetes management in individuals with kidney disease. Participants will apply principles of both diabetes and renal nutrition to support individualized meal planning, interpret nutrition label information, and identify strategies to address food access barriers while promoting adherence to nutrition recommendations for people receiving kidney care.

Rozalina G. McCoy, MD, MS 

Dr. McCoy is the associate professor of medicine, director of precision medicine and population health, and vice chief of clinical research in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Nutrition at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.  

Lance Sloan, MD, MSE, FACE, FACP, FASN, FEAA, FASPC 

Dr. Sloan is the president of the Texas Institute for Kidney and Endocrine Disorders and clinical assistant professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX, and Sam Houston State University, TX. 

Vanessa Connolly, RDN, CSR, LD 

Vanessa is a board-certified specialist in renal nutrition and founder of Vanessa Connolly Nutrition, LLC (Grain and Green Kidneys).
