WEBINAR

From Distress to Direction: Supporting People with Diabetes using Acceptance Commitment Therapy

OVERVIEW

Living with diabetes can be an overwhelming, daily balancing act—physically, emotionally, and socially. Diabetes distress, a unique form of emotional strain linked to managing this chronic condition, can erode self-care, motivation, and quality of life. This presentation introduces practical Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) strategies to help individuals with diabetes notice their struggles without judgment, reconnect with what matters most, and take small, workable steps toward better well-being. Participants will leave with tools they can integrate immediately into patient care to support resilience, self-compassion, and long-term engagement in diabetes management.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Describe the concept of diabetes distress and its impact on self-management, mental health, and clinical outcomes.

  1. Apply core Acceptance Commitment Therapy practices—such as values clarification, mindfulness, and cognitive defusion—to help patients navigate diabetes-related stress.

  1. Integrate brief, evidence-based interventions into clinical encounters to enhance patient engagement and promote sustainable self-care behaviors.
