Focus on Diabetes  

OVERVIEW

Focus on Diabetes® (FOD) is a multi-year initiative that brings together the American Diabetes Association® and Visionary Partners from leading organizations in vision care to increase awareness about diabetes and eye health. These free continuing education courses help eye health and primary care professionals reduce the risk, treat and manage diabetes-related eye disease.

Eye Health Professional Courses

Focus on Diabetes: Communicating the Risks of Vision Loss and Effective Prevention Strategies

This module, consisting of three lessons, begins by instructing healthcare providers on the use of person-first, strengths-based language to motivate patients to undergo diabetic retinopathy screenings. The second lesson addresses the screening and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, along with the socioeconomic obstacles that limit access to these services. The final lesson emphasizes community engagement strategies, providing healthcare providers with the tools to work alongside communities in overcoming social determinants of health (SDOH) to improve screening access and facilitate early intervention.

Focus on Diabetes Series

This online series highlight's the role of the eye care team in

four modules, focusing on recognizing risk factors for diabetes and encouraging screening for appropriate patients, while explaining the importance of lifestyle modifications to prevent and manage diabetes.

Focus on Diabetes: A Closer Look at Diabetes for Optometrists

This is an updated module, focusing on appreciating the person-centered considerations involved in the treatment of diabetic eye disease, understanding the latest recommendations for person-centered, outcomes-driven pharmacologic management of type 2 diabetes and how newer treatments affect diabetic eye disease specifically, and learning several approaches to effectively communicating with patients with diabetes and eye complications.

Low Vision Rehabilitation in Diabetes Care

Diabetes Related Retinal Disease

In this module, you will learn how to recognize the burden of diabetes and diabetes-related retinal disease (DRD). You will discover the role of point-of-care artificial intelligence (AI) technology to screen for DRD. The course will discuss ophthalmic treatments for DRD.

Diabetes and Eye Health: A Guide for Primary Care Clinicians
