Complete this FREE four-part online course at your own pace and unlock better health outcomes for people living with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. 

 

Developed from the Standards of Care in Diabetes—2024 and utilizing the most current science-based content for cardiologists, nephrologists, and endocrinologists, this course will equip you with knowledge to minimize cardiovascular and cardiorenal disease and optimize glycemic management for the people you see.

 

On completion, a certificate will be received.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

During this course you will:

  • Elevate your expertise in cardiorenal and metabolic management.  
  • Learn current lifestyle and pharmacotherapy guidelines for treating people with type 2 diabetes and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, heart failure, and/or chronic kidney disease.  
  • Understand how to develop management plans with individual- and medication-specific considerations using realistic case studies.

MODULES

MODULE 1

Achieving Goals with Cardiac and Renal Protection in Mind

  • Recall current glucose, blood pressure, and lipid goals for people with type 2 diabetes. 

  • Recommend appropriate lifestyle and pharmacotherapy interventions for people with type 2 diabetes to mitigate cardiorenal and metabolic risk.

MODULE 2

Diabetes with Cardiovascular and Kidney Complications

 

  • Describe options to reduce cardiovascular risk in individuals with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD).  

  • Summarize the evidence supporting the use of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor treatment for individuals with heart failure (HF).  

  • Identify treatment options for people with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD).  

  • Discuss the latest guidelines for the management of people with type 2 diabetes and ASCVD, CKD, and/or HF. 

MODULE 3

Secondary Prevention

 

 

 

  • Recognize the relationship between type 2 diabetes and usual risk factors for adverse cardiovascular outcomes in people with a history of ASCVD or HF.
  • Assess guideline-directed therapies for the management of established risk factors in people with a history of ASCVD or HF.

  • Consider strategies for incorporating cardioprotective or cardiorenal protective therapies into the management plan for improved glycemic management.

  • Identify complex interrelationships between cardiovascular risk factors, renal function, and optimal glycemic management. 

MODULE 4

Lifestyle Management and Heart Health

 

 

  • Review the pathophysiology and presentation of co-existing diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease as a “triple threat.”
     
  • Apply motivational interviewing skills to lifestyle management of a patient living with these co-existing conditions.

  • Illustrate the principles of nutrition therapy as a behavior change strategy to target multiple risk factors in complex patients with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease.
