PROGRAM

Chronic Kidney Disease: 3 Modules a-la-carte

OVERVIEW

The ADA’s Chronic Kidney Disease in Diabetes: A CE Series features three on-demand, self-paced modules (up to 3 CE credits total) that equip health care professionals with evidence-based strategies for screening, diagnosing, and managing chronic kidney disease (CKD) in individuals with diabetes. The program addresses early detection and staging, lifestyle and pharmacologic treatment options, and the intersection of CKD and cardiovascular disease. It is designed for primary care clinicians, diabetes care and education specialists, nurses, pharmacists, and other members of the health care team.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Module 1: Engage to Empower: Screening, Diagnosis, and Staging of Chronic Kidney Disease

  • Identify the pathophysiology and risk factors of chronic kidney disease in diabetes.
  • Determine screening and monitoring best practices for chronic kidney disease in diabetes.

Module 2: Lifestyle Management and Pharmacologic Treatment Options for People with Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease

  • Determine appropriate lifestyle modifications, including specific nutrition interventions, physical activity, and weight management, for managing chronic kidney disease.
  • Select appropriate glucose-lowering agents for people with diabetes at various stages of chronic kidney disease.
  • Assess the kidney effects of glucose-lowering medications in patients with diabetes and CKD.

Module 3: Chronic Kidney Disease and the Relationship to Cardiovascular Disease

  • Evaluate new therapies with cardiovascular and kidney protection.
  • Select appropriate hypertension treatments to reduce CKD and its progression in diabetes.
  • Identify people with diabetes and CKD who need a referral to a nephrologist and/or cardiologist.

MODULES

MODULE 1

Engage to Empower: Screening, Diagnosis, and Staging of Chronic Kidney Disease

Learn how to detect chronic kidney disease (CKD) early in people with diabetes by understanding key risk factors, interpreting eGFR and UACR results, and following best practices for screening and staging.

MODULE 2

Lifestyle Management and Pharmacologic Treatment Options for People with Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease

Explore evidence-based strategies to manage diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD) through lifestyle changes and medication selection, including nutrition, activity, and glucose-lowering therapies tailored to kidney function and treatment goals.

MODULE 3

Chronic Kidney Disease and the Relationship to Cardiovascular Disease

Learn how to reduce cardiovascular and kidney risks in people with diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD) through evidence-based hypertension management, therapeutic selection, and timely specialist referrals. This research-based module emphasizes integrated strategies for improving cardiorenal outcomes across the care continuum.
