The Kidney in Cardiometabolic Disease
ADA Member Exclusive Webinar

This session will explore the kidney’s role in metabolism, its impact on heart function, and how these mechanisms contribute to cardiometabolic complications in diabetes. The speaker will highlight how insulin resistance and hyperglycemia affect sodium transport and RAAS activity, leading to increased cardiac workload and heart failure. The webinar will also cover how SGLT inhibition improves sodium and glucose balance, reducing cardiovascular and kidney dysfunction.
Overview
ADA Member Exclusive Webinar—Join ADA professional members for The Kidney in Cardiometabolic Disease, a one-hour webinar led by a single expert speaker. A live Q&A will follow the presentation.
Learning Objectives
  • To understand the kidneys' role in metabolism.
  • Better understand how the kidney functions.
  • How the Kidney affects the heart.
  • Use the above objectives to improve patient care.
Key Messages
  • Diabetes/hyperglycemia and insulin resistance with hyperinsulinemia increase sodium transport and Angiotensin 2 production in the kidney, resulting in increased intravascular volume leading to increased preload and afterload in the heart, cardiac remodeling, and heart failure.
  • Inhibition of SGLT reduces Na/Glucose uptake and RMS activity by multiple mechanisms.
  • This improvement in Na and glucose homeostasis reduces cardiovascular and kidney dysfunction.
