Diabetes and Weight Management Part 2
Module Description

This module will focus on incretin therapy for patients with type 2 diabetes and obesity and discuss ways to manage common side effects.

Learning Objectives
  1. Select an appropriate incretin therapy for a patient with type 2 diabetes and obesity.
  2. Identify ways to manage common side effects of incretin therapy.
  3. Recognize an insurance coverage and cost barriers in prescribing incretin therapy.

Dr. Lauren Oshman is a family physician and associate professor in the University of Michigan Department of Family Medicine. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. She sees patients at the Chelsea Health Center and delivers babies at U-M's Von Voightlander Women's Hospital. She is also the program director of the Michigan Collaborative for Type 2 Diabetes (www.mct2d.org(link is external)),. Dr. Oshman enjoys taking care of patients from newborn to elderly and helping all patients achieve their best health.


Dr. Arizaca is a graduate of University Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru. She completed her Internal Medicine internship and residency at Henry ford Hospital in Detroit, MI. Prior to joining Michigan Medicine, she worked in private practice in San Antonio, TX for more than twelve years, where she was also part of the clinical leadership team. Her primary focus during that time was comprehensive geriatric care. In addition, she served as Clinical Assistant Professor at University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine in San Antonio, TX. Dr. Arizaca is board certified in Internal Medicine as well as Obesity Medicine.


Dr. Jonathan Gabison is a clinical assistant professor at the University of Michigan in the Department of Family Medicine, where he practices full spectrum family medicine and has a weight management clinic. He attended medical school at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and graduated from residency at University of Michigan in 2020. He is currently a clinical content expert for the Michigan Collaborative for Type 2 Diabetes and he is board certified in Obesity Medicine.


Andrew T. Kraftson, MD is a Clinical Associate Professor in the division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Diabetes (MEND) at the University of Michigan. Dr. Kraftson received his medical degree from the Chicago Medical School (North Chicago, IL). He completed both his internal medicine residency and chief residency at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University (Evanston, IL) and then underwent fellowship training in endocrinology at the University of Michigan. Dr. Kraftson joined the faculty at Michigan in 2010.

Dr. Kraftson’s clinical and research interests are specifically focused in obesity medicine. He is the director of the Weight Navigation Program and the Post-Bariatric Endocrinology clinic and a participating physician in the Investigational Weight Management Program. In addition to these roles, Dr. Kraftson is the Associate Program Director for the Endocrinology Fellowship program.
