Chronic Kidney Disease: 3 Modules a-la-carte
Overview
The ADA’s Chronic Kidney Disease in Diabetes: A CE Series features three on-demand, self-paced modules (up to 3 CE credits total) that equip health care professionals with evidence-based strategies for screening, diagnosing, and managing chronic kidney disease (CKD) in individuals with diabetes. The program addresses early detection and staging, lifestyle and pharmacologic treatment options, and the intersection of CKD and cardiovascular disease. It is designed for primary care clinicians, diabetes care and education specialists, nurses, pharmacists, and other members of the health care team. 
Learning Objectives

Module 1: Engage to Empower: Screening, Diagnosis, and Staging of Chronic Kidney Disease

  • Identify the pathophysiology and risk factors of chronic kidney disease in diabetes. 
  • Determine screening and monitoring best practices for chronic kidney disease in diabetes. 

Module 2: Lifestyle Management and Pharmacologic Treatment Options for People with Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease 

  • Determine appropriate lifestyle modifications, including specific nutrition interventions, physical activity, and weight management, for managing chronic kidney disease. 
  • Select appropriate glucose-lowering agents for people with diabetes at various stages of chronic kidney disease.   
  • Assess the kidney effects of glucose-lowering medications in patients with diabetes and CKD.   

Module 3: Chronic Kidney Disease and the Relationship to Cardiovascular Disease  

  • Evaluate new therapies with cardiovascular and kidney protection. 
  • Select appropriate hypertension treatments to reduce CKD and its progression in diabetes. 
  • Identify people with diabetes and CKD who need a referral to a nephrologist and/or cardiologist.

Edward Chao, DO

Dr. Chao is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, and a clinician at the VA San Diego Healthcare System. He is the Principal Investigator of health design studies on increasing access to and engagement with diabetes technology. As Co-Chair of his division’s Research Subcommittee, he helps spearhead innovative measures to help faculty start, sustain, and spread their research. 

Sara (Mandy) Reece, PharmD, CDCES, BC-ADM, BCACP, FCCP, FDCES

Dr. Reece earned her Doctor of Pharmacy from Mercer University and completed a community pharmacy residency program with Mercer University and The Kroger Co. Dr. Reece holds board certification in ambulatory care and advanced diabetes management. She is also an adjunct faculty member, ambulatory care pharmacist, and diabetes specialist with Northeast Georgia Medical Center Family Medicine Graduate Medical Education Program. Dr. Reece has a blog, Reece’s Pieces in a Diabetes World.
