Pdf Summary
Gestational diabetes (GDM), a form of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy, is influenced by various factors such as race, societal factors, and lifestyle. GDM screening typically takes place between 24-28 weeks of pregnancy due to the increased risk of insulin resistance as hormones levels rise. The association between perinatal depression and GDM is still not fully understood, but it is believed that insulin resistance and the stress of managing GDM may contribute to an increased risk of perinatal depression. Health literacy plays a crucial role in improving GDM outcomes in disadvantaged communities, providing them with the resources and skills necessary to manage and prevent GDM. The use of continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) for GDM management is limited due to insurance barriers, but there is potential for increased use in the future. Approximately 50% of women who develop GDM will go on to develop type 2 diabetes. While there is limited research on the pairing of doulas with individuals who have GDM, there is evidence of the benefits of doulas on maternal morbidity outcomes in general. Balancing weight counseling for GDM patients involves screening for disordered eating patterns and referring high-risk individuals for counseling. Insulin is the preferred pharmacological treatment for GDM, but oral agents like Metformin or Glyburide may be an option with consideration of the pros and cons. To become a certified diabetes educator, professionals need to meet certain practice and experience requirements and pass a board exam. Pregnant women and families should be aware of signs and symptoms such as preeclampsia, insulin resistance, excessive weight gain or loss, nutrition deficiencies, and untreated thyroid disorders. Additional resources for understanding and addressing GDM are available through organizations like the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
